3 Tips for Choosing Outdoor Furniture

A custom backyard with built-in outdoor kitchen and fire pit isn’t complete without the finishing touch—outdoor furniture. But choosing the right pieces can be overwhelming. Here are three tips for choosing the best outdoor furniture:

  1. Think of how you’ll use the space. The first step for buying outdoor furniture is to consider how you’ll use the space. The purpose and usage will dictate the type of furniture you need and eliminate the urge to buy furniture that doesn’t match the purpose of the space. An outdoor area designed to host family dinners needs a durable dining set and chairs for kids and adults, while a relaxing oasis might need a lounge chair or hammock.
  2. Consider the climate. Outdoor furniture is made to withstand the elements, but not every piece is created equally. Depending on the climate in your area, you may need different features in furniture. In dry, sunny places like Colorado, you may want to stay away from wood furniture that can splinter. But in windy places, you’ll likely want heavy furniture that won’t blow away. Consider what your furniture will have to endure and plan accordingly.
  3. Measure, measure, measure. There’s nothing worse than getting a great piece of outdoor furniture, only to find that it doesn’t fit the space correctly. Measure and re-measure the area to ensure your piece will fit. Furniture that is too big can feel cramped and uncomfortable, while pieces that are too small can be awkward and dwarfed.
